Ivan Bregov, Institute for Market Economics: Prosecutor’s office must be held accountable

“The idea that the prosecutor’s office should have the same status of independence as the court is erroneous,” Ivan Bregov from the Institute for Market Economics’ Legal Programme said for the BNR. In his words as an instrument of criminal law policy the prosecutor’s office must be held accountable.

According to Ivan Bregov the prosecution wants to be some kind of replica of the public processes taking place, but, in this way, it is undermining the work of the rank-and-file prosecutors.

He also raised the question why the prosecutor’s office has, for years, been “bungling many problematic tangles of politically-connected criminality.”

Regarding the sole nomination for member of the Supreme Judicial Council from the College of Prosecutors – that of Evgeny Ivanov - Mr. Bregov commented that it was becoming tradition for there to be just one nomination for high-ranking positions within the prosecutor’s office. “In an environment like this there is no way that any bold views can spring up, and the model imposed is yielding its result – autocratic rule,” Ivan Bregov said.
