The National Assembly has approved, at first reading, the introduction of voluntary military service conscription for a period of up to 6 months, the Bulgarian news agency BTA reports.

Conscripts aged 18-40 will undergo two modules of training – basic military training and specialized training. The aim is to form reservist units.

During the fixed-term military service the volunteers will have the status of servicemen and will be paid salaries by the Ministry of Defence.

There also exists the option of basic military training for school students, said General  Konstantin Popov, chair of the parliamentary defence committee.

The bill is to be voted at second reading.
