Raina Konstantinova: Amendments to Radio and TV Act do not offer a perspective

“The Radio and Television Act is like a Mexican blanket – it has been repaired several times but there is no law cast in one piece equal to the current situation and with a perspective of at least 5 years,” Raina Konstantinova, former director of the EBU’s Radio Department and chair of the BNR Public Council said for the BNR’s Horizont channel.

Commenting on the resignation submitted by BNR Director-General Andon Baltakov, Raina Konstantinova said: “When a director-general sees his hands are tied he wants to do something but something is missing, something that is important to him. I do not think it is the Ministry of Culture’s fault. It boils down to failure to fulfil one’s commitments.”

Raina Konstantinova stated further that a debate has been ongoing for 27 years as to whom public service media belong to, and that there are still a lot of people, including politicians, who believe that the Bulgarian National Radio and Bulgarian National TV are state-run broadcasters.

“All perturbations connected with the BNR since 1990 have taken place because it is doing its job,” she said.
