Bulgarians want Skopje to recognize historical past

83.8% of Bulgarians are against support for North Macedonia’s EU membership until an agreement was reached on the historical past, a poll by Alpha Research shows. 10.2% believe that Sofia should support Skopje unconditionally. 5.9% answered that they can not express an opinion. 54.1% believe that Bulgaria should recognize the modern Macedonian identity only if North Macedonia recognized that in the early twentieth century the vast majority of the population there identified itself as Bulgarian, and the creation of the new "Macedonian national identity" began after 1944. 1/3 of respondents are against the recognition of Macedonian identity, BGNES agency has reported.
