More than 60,000 children are born anually in Bulgaria

On the Day of Maternity Care (Midwife’s Day), the Bulgarian Association of Health Professionals congratulated doctors and midwives. Although we are going through a difficult time of health risk and staff shortage, you continue to welcome new lives with open hearts, the association wrote in its address to the medics.

According to the analysis of the National Center for Public Health and Analysis, between 2015 and 2019 the number of newborns in Bulgaria decreased by 1000 to 2000 babies per year. Currently, there are twice less midwives in Bulgaria than needed. Their average age is 55 years. That is why in 2021 the medical universities in Bulgaria are planning to admit more freshmen to study midwifery, the letter further reads, BTA reports.
