National Assembly adopts Law on Bulgarian Sign Language

Bulgaria’s National Assembly has officially adopted the Law on Bulgarian Sign Language. The Bulgarian Sign Language has been recognized as an independent language. The state will finance translation services for the deaf and the deafblind for up to 120 hours a year. Students with such disabilities will be entitled to 60 hours of additional translation services per semester.

The law obliges the Bulgarian municipalities to provide administrative services to nearly 120,000 deaf and deafblind people within 2 years. The Bulgarian Sign Language will become a special subject in schools for students with sensory impairments. Parents of such children are also entitled to education in sign language.
