Bulgaria ranks 112th in the latest World Press Freedom Index of Reporters Without Borders which includes a total of 180 countries across the globe. In 2020, Bulgaria held the 111th position. The decline is the result of cases of violence against journalists in Bulgaria and the non-transparent financing of media by the Bulgarian state using European funds.
Bulgaria is last in the EU in terms of media freedom, while Turkey is the only country in the Balkans with a worse result than Bulgaria and holds 153rd place. The greatest freedom of speech among the Balkan countries is seen in Romania, which ranks 48th in the index, BGNES reports.
