New labels will help us choose food

The Bulgarian Association for the Study of Obesity and Concomitant Diseases supports the independent labelling system for Nutri-Score products. Entirely voluntary, the scale aims to guide consumers about the overall nutritional value of a product, complementing the label already available.

It is extremely important at a time when all information is just a click away, even false information, to have as many official sources of reliable, scientifically based data as possible, says Assoc. Prof. Dr. Teodora Handjieva-Darlenska, chairwoman of Association. According to her, the system is a good way to monitor what we offer our body, without categorizing the food as good and bad.

The information is presented through a simple scheme combining letters and colours. The highest nutritional value is green with the letter A, and the letter E on a red background means low nutritional value.

The scale is calculated using a special algorithm developed by a research team at Oxford University. The system is already recommended for implementation in a number of European countries, including France, Germany, Belgium, Spain, the Netherlands.
