Dalmatian pelicans have returned to Persina Nature Park near Belene for the first time since the 1950s. Until now, the protected species have only nested in Srebarna Reserve.
Persina Nature Park was established on December 20, 2000. The designation of the park aims at conservation and restoration of Danube wetlands located in the municipalities of Nikopol, Belene and Svishtov. Six years ago, a project which aimed to increase the number of Dalmatian pelicans was launched on the territory of Persina Nature Park. In the beginning, only 2 pairs of Dalmatian pelicans nested in the park, but now there are over 50 pairs.
The Dalmatian Pelican is among the most endangered species in Europe. It is found only in Bulgaria, Greece, Albania, Romania and some parts of North Macedonia, reported the Bulgarian National Television.
