Bulgaria marks 9 years since Burgas bus bombing

No commemorative ceremony in memory of the victims of the Burgas Airport terrorist bombing will be held this year, because of the coronavirus pandemic. The Jewish community in Burgas hopes that next year the situation will return to normal and they will be able to mark the tenth anniversary of the tragic event.

On July 18, 2012, a bus carrying Israeli tourists exploded outside the airport in the Bulgarian coastal city of Burgas. The explosion killed the Bulgarian bus driver Mustafa Kyosov, five Israeli tourists and the perpetrator of the terrorist attack. Nearly 40 people were injured, reminds BNR Burgas.

A monument in memory of the victims of the 2012 Burgas bus bombing was unveiled at Burgas Airport. In 2020, the Specialized Criminal Court sentenced two men to life in jail without the possibility of parole. Meliad Farah, a Lebanese-Australian, and Hassan El Hajj Hassan, a Lebanese-Canadian, were found guilty of helping a Lebanese-French man who prosecutors said died after planting the bomb. Their whereabouts are unknown.
