Ivan Geshev: The transfer of the Witness Protection Bureau to the Justice Ministry to put protected witnesses at risk

Bulgaria's Prosecutor General Ivan Geshev described the legislative changes by force of which the Witness Protection Bureau in Bulgaria went under the management of the Ministry of Justice as "off the cuff". In his words, the transfer of powers over the Bureau from the Prosecutor’s Office to the Ministry of Justice will increase the risks faced by protected witnesses. 

Ivan Geshev stated that it was not clear exactly how the Bureau would be transferred from the Prosecutor’s Office to the Ministry of Justice and how protected witnesses would receive effective protection during the transition period. Geshev did not answer whether he wanted the Witness Protection Bureau to take care of his security in the future, or whether he would use the services of the National Service for Protection.
