During the past week 150 cyclists from Bulgaria and Romania covered the Dunav Ultra cycling trail, from the town of Vidin to Durankulak village for a common cause – to popularize more than 110 towns and villages along the way.
Almost 40 cyclists from neighbouring Romania took part in the traditional cycling marathon. The best-trained participants had set themselves the task of covering the 700-km. distance in under 48 hours, but, according to plan, it took the bulk of the riders 5 to 10 days.
The municipalities along the Danube on their part did their best to popularize the region as admirably suited for nature adventures, sports and cultural routes. Flags with the names of the respective town or village were hoisted along the way for cyclists to photograph and share on social media. Thanks to the efforts of all parties involved in the endeavor, the picturesque towns and villages along the Bulgarian portion of the Danube appeared on social media in more than 8,000 photographs.
Both participants and organizers say that this year Dunav Ultra established the event as Bulgaria’s No. 1 cycling trail, and that there is every hope that it will develop into the most popular cycling trail in the Balkans.
