Lawyer Vassil Vassilev has won a lawsuit against Bulgaria at the European Court of Human Rights over the wiretapping of a telephone conversation between himself and a client. The court in Strasbourg awarded him 3,000 euro in damages and the same amount in costs for violation of privacy and the right to a fair trial.
Vassilev was tapped while he was defending former Minister of Defence Nikolay Tsonev, charged in a bribery case. The recording was made on 21 March, 2021. Vassil Vassilev found out about its existence during the trial and referred the matter to the prosecutor’s office, but as no investigation ensued, he lodged an appeal with the European Court of Human Rights.
