Ombudsman Diana Kovacheva has asked for an analysis and assessment of the effect of the introduction of environmental stickers for cars of up to 3.5 tons.
She is recommending that the sticker requirement be abolished because the extent to which it prevents technical roadworthiness test violations is debatable. The measure does not apply to lorries and buses which are the biggest sources of pollution, and there is no regulation concerning the gauging of the lower level of pollution by gas-powered cars. Dеtermining the environmental group the vehicle belongs to is formal, depending on the year of registration and the European emissions standard, something that is already sanctioned with the vehicle registration. The environmental sticker does not solve the problem of air pollution in the cities, it only makes roadworthiness tests more expensive, Ombudsman Diana Kovacheva says.
