The contract for the construction of the tunnel under the Shipka pass in the Balkan Range in Central Bulgaria will be signed soon, said Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Regional Development and Pubilc Works Grozdan Karadjov. At a meeting in the town of Gabrovo in the vicinity of Shipka Pass, he assured the local public that the project has not been stopped.

The company that won the tender has assured the minister that it agrees to build at the proposed price of 179 m euros, despite the high rise in the prices of construction materials. The EU will co-finance one third of the construction costs of the tunnel under Shipka.

A total of EUR 600 million are expected to be received for the construction of the tunnel as well as for the main road from Ruse to Veliko Tarnovo and the Struma Motorway through the Kresna Gorge under the Transport Connectivity 2021-2027 programme. The rest of the money will come from the budget, the minister explained.
