The Committee on Legal Affairs in the European Parliament refused to revoke the immunity of MEP from the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats, Elena Yoncheva, BNR correspondent Angelina Piskova reported.

The decision is expected to be voted in plenary hall in the period February 14 - February 17. The members of the committee justified their decision with Yoncheva's statement that the legal procedure against her aimed to hamper her political activity, as well as her activity as an MEP. "Elena Yoncheva is a member of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs, where she regularly speaks against politicians in her country and criticizes the lack of action against corruption at the highest levels of government," MEPs said.

In 2019 the Bulgarian Prosecutor's Office sent a request to the European Parliament to strip Yoncheva of immunity on charges of money laundering from the bankrupt Corporate Commercial Bank.
