People in Macedonia who identify as Bulgarian will be the third biggest group in the country when the official results of the latest census of the population in 2021 are made public, Menduh Thaci, leader of the Democratic Party of Albanians said in the studio of TV21, tribuna.mk reports.

The politician was citing unofficial data he is familiar with during a debate held in the Albanian language on Skopje’s reactions to the war in Ukraine.

A census of the population in North Macedonia was held in 2021, the first in over 20 years. While it was taking place many Macedonian Bulgarians complained of pressure by census takers and the authorities on citizens not to declare their Bulgaria identity.
