Greece warns of free-floating mines in the Black Sea

Greece’s Ministry of Shipping warns that mines near Ukraine’s ports are endangering ships, Ekathimerini informs. The Integrated Search and Rescue Center with the Greek Ministry of Shipping and Maritime Affairs has informed the Union of Greek Shipowners that numerous sea mines near the ports of Odessa, Ochakiv and Yuzhny have been unmoored and are afloat at sea, Ekathimerini further writes. According to the media, Greece’s Maritime Attaché in Novorosiysk, Russia, received the information from the regional port administration of Sochi.

Experts cannot yet predict whether the sea mines will reach the Aegean Sea. Greece has issued a warning to Greek-flagged vessels to change their route, in order to avoid the risk, the correspondent of the BNR in Greece Katya Peeva reported.

The information was confirmed by Ukrainian journalist Yuri Tkachev from Odessa, who was arrested by the Security Service of Ukraine on March 19, the Union of Bulgarian Journalists reports. Yuri Tkachev is editor-in-chief of the online newspaper Timer. “Those who have been following Tkachev’s publications since the beginning of the war in Ukraine contend that he has not been spreading any propaganda and has been repeatedly calling for an end to the war”, the Union of Bulgarian Journalists further wrote.
