Former Romanian Tourism Minister Elena Udrea has sought political asylum in Greece due to inhuman treatment, threats of murder and judicial political strife. These claims have been presented to the court in Bulgaria's Blagoevgrad by the Romanian and Bulgarian lawyers of Udrea. They are challenging her arrest in Bulgaria last week on a re-issued European arrest warrant.

Udrea's lawyers argue that Romania's Supreme Court has already revoked Udrea's previous conviction in the same case, and that a second verdict which followed in 2022 in a corruption case is evidence of political persecution.

The court adjourned the case to April 19th and called on the Romanian state to provide information on the conditions under which Udrea should serve her sentence if she is extradited to Romania.
