Saint Lazarus day celebrated today

Photo: archive

The Bulgarian Orthodox church celebrates the raising of Lazarus from Bethany by Jesus Christ four day after his death. In fact, the resurrection of Lazarus is a symbolic harbinger of the resurrection of Jesus Christ himself at the end of Holy Week.

Lazarus Saturday is a moveable feast celebrated on the Saturday before Christ’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem, Palm Sunday, called Tsvetnitsa in Bulgaria, which signals the coming of spring, the awakening of nature and the revival of life.

In folklore tradition on Lazarus day, lazarki girls come out at dawn, dressed in traditional wedding costumes, to make the rounds of the houses in their village and perform different rituals connected with live, marriage, health and fertility.
