A written proposal has been sent to the Bulgarian Parliament to include April 20 as an official holiday in Bulgaria's national calendar, historian Prof. Plamen Pavlov told BNR.

"The letter does not come from me alone, it comes from the Vasil Levski Foundation, on the idea of Galina Zlatareva. It was also sent to the president," Pavlov said.

Bulgaria marks 146 years since the outbreak of the April Uprising. On April 20, 1876, the first gun was fired in Koprivshtitsa for the liberation of Bulgaria.
The tragic outcome of the uprising and the sacrifice of the Bulgarians led to the Russo-Turkish Liberation War and the resurrection of the Bulgarian state in 1878.
