On May 2 the Bulgarian Orthodox Church honors the memory of Tsar Boris I Michael.

Boris 1, also known as Boris-Mihail was the ruler of the First Bulgarian Empire between 852 and 889. He introduced Christianity in Bulgaria.

When in 885 the disciples of Saints Cyril and Methodius were banished from Great Moravia, Boris I gave them refuge and provided assistance which saved the Glagolithic and later promoted the development of the Cyrillic script. In 889 he retired to a monastery. Boris I died on May 2, 907. He was canonized as a saint soon after his death.
