Construction of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal, in which Bulgaria has a 20% stake, has started near the Greek city of Alexandroupolis.

Bulgarian Prime Minister Kiril Petkov said that today will be remembered in the political history of Greece and Bulgaria as the day of the pursuit of economic freedom and political independence.

Petkov thanked Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis for his political support, but also for the energy support Bulgaria is receiving now that Russia has cut off natural gas supplies to this country. In Petkov's words, the Russian pressure can only be resisted together by the countries.

Greek Prime Minister Mitsotakis said that very soon Greece will be able to receive increased quantities of LNG which will not only satisfy the national market, but will also secure a substantial part of the Balkans' energy needs.
