Photo: BNR

A counter placed downtown Sofia monitors the country's public debt. The plate also counts the money that each family owes on average from the total amount. Values are in Bulgarian levs. The counter is at the crossroads between Tsar Osvoboditel Blvd. and Rakovski St., above the office of the economist and former Deputy Prime Minister Nikolay Vassilev.

The countdown started from BGN 31.09 billion of the country's debt (EUR 15.9 billion). The average amount per Bulgarian family is over BGN 15,500 (EUR 7,900).

Public or sovereign debt is all financial obligations of the state, both of the government and local authorities, which are covered by issued government bonds or international loans.
