Record-low yield of oil-bearing roses expected in Bulgaria due to low purchase price

A record-low harvest of oil-bearing roses is expected in Bulgaria this year, Hristo Nikolov, chairman of the National Association of Rose Producers in Bulgaria, told Radio Plovdiv. He expects between 8,000 and 9,000 tonnes to be harvested, given that up to 15,000 tonnes of roses could be harvested.

The reason for the low yield, which will be close to last year's levels, is the lack of workforce and the low purchase price for the collected petals. It is about BGN 2.50 /EUR 1.28/ per kilogram.

According to Hristov, in the last 3 years rose growers have been working at a purchase price which is very close to the costs they incur.
