The Ministry of Labour and Social Policy is proposing a new poverty line in the country, as of 1 January 2023, of EUR 202 (504 Leva) a month.

The draft decree has been published for public debate. The increase proposed is by EUR 46 or 22% and is the biggest increase in the poverty line in 10 years; the range of persons within the system of social assistance will be extended to over 96,000 people. The monthly benefits for 670,000 persons with disabilities depend on the poverty line, so they too will go up.

But even with the new poverty line that is being proposed, over 1.5 million people in the country, or 22% of the population will still remain below it.
