Bulgaria presents unilateral declaration on the "Macedonian language"

According to article 22 of the Negotiating Framework for the Accession of North Macedonia to the EU and the reference there to the Macedonian constitutional language, Bulgaria declares that "the creation of 'Macedonian language' in 1944-1945 in former Yugoslavia was an act of secondary codification of the Bulgarian literary language further ‘enriched’ with local forms, thereby simulating a ‘natural’ process based on a dialectal form.”

Any reference to the official language of North Macedonia in documents, positions, statements of the EU should be understood strictly in accordance with the Constitution of this country and should in no way be interpreted as recognition by Bulgaria of the "Macedonian language". This is what an official position of the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry reads.
