Sofia Airport reports drop in number of passengers

The volume of passengers at Sofia airport in July has not reached pre-pandemic levels yet, the Sofia airport press service has announced.

Since the beginning of 2022 the airport has handled more than 3.2 million passengers, and the estimates until the end of the year are not good – a 23% drop in numbers on an annual basis until the end of this year, compared to 2019. The total number of flights, compared to 2019 again, has gone down by almost 12%. There is a drop in the number of freight and mail – by over 22% compared to 2019. The main cause of the drop in numbers are the Covid-19 restrictions, the insecurity, fear of infection, as well as the situation in Ukraine. Other factors include flight cancellations by some airlines, as well as high fuel prices.
