President Rumen Radev congratulated Bulgarians on Independence Day on Facebook:

“114 years ago our ancestors renounced all claims that Bulgaria could be subordinate to anyone else. That our national development, our public life and culture could be held hostage to another’s will,” President Radev writes.

The celebratory events started with a solemn service at the 40 Holy Martyrs church in Veliko Turnovo, the city where the independence manifesto was read out. “Independence Day is a prodigious and important day because Bulgaria kept its dignity,” metropolitan bishop Gregory of Veliko Turnovo said.  “All Bulgarians should take care to preserve our independence because it is our most valuable treasure, because independence needs to be upheld every day,” he said.
