The website of the Presidential Administration has been the target of a massive DDoS distribution attack, the Presidential Press Office informed. The press-release said the attack caused a delay or temporary restriction of access to the site. Measures have been taken to mitigate the impact of the hacking attack. The content of the website was not compromised, only access to the site was hindered, the statement said.

The Sofia City Prosecutor's Office initiated an investigation on the incident, and in connection with information disseminated in the media about a hacker attack on Bulgarian websites. The investigation has been assigned to the State Agency for National Security and the General Directorate for Combating Organised Crime of the Ministry of Interior.

A few hours later, at a press conference of the prosecutor's office, Deputy Prosecutor General Borislav Sarafov announced that the attack on Bulgarian websites started in the city of Magnitogorsk in the Russian Federation. Sarafov expressed hope that the individuals behind it would be identified through international legal assistance, but did not commit to specifying whether it was the initiative of any individuals or state structures, saying it was a matter of investigative confidentiality. Prosecutor General Ivan Geshev, who described the case as a criminal offence affecting the foundations of the Bulgarian state, specified that the State Agency "National Security" , the State Criminal Investigative Service and the special Cybercrime Unit of the National Investigative Service were working on the case.
