A stalemate in parliament: MPs unable to elect a Speaker

The 48th National Assembly, on its first day of work after four attempts, failed to elect its president and dissolved until tomorrow morning. There were four nominees for the post initially - Rosen Zhelyazkov of GERB-UDF, Nikola Minchev of "We Continue the Change", Petar Petrov of " Vazrazhdane" and Kristian Vigenin of "BSP for Bulgaria". 


None of the candidates managed to win the support of the majority of the votes. A second round of voting was held with the candidates who received the most ballots - Rosen Zhelyazkov and Nikola Minchev, but neither of them received the support of the majority in the second vote. 

After the consultations in the recess, the deputies started a new procedure for the election of the President of the National Assembly with a fifth candidate - Yordan Tsonev from the MRF.
