More than 800 Bulgarian science teachers have been trained at CERN in the last 14 years, says Svezhina Dimitrova, director of the Astronomical Observatory and Planetarium in Varna. The observatory team was the first to make contact with the European Organization for Nuclear Research in 2008, while Bulgaria ranks first in Europe in the number of teachers who have undergone a one-week training at CERN.
This year, two groups of teachers from across the country visited CERN, Dimitrova said after returning from Switzerland. During the training, the teachers were able to tour three of CERN's detectors, where new particles are born for scientists to study their characteristics.
A "CERN Science Portal" is currently being developed. It will provide information about the organisation's activities and ongoing research projects. In 2023, a new education centre will also be opened at CERN, allowing more schoolchildren, students and teachers from all over the world to come to Switzerland.
