A Bulgarian Antarctic expedition, led by Prof. Hristo Pimpirev, is heading for Livingstone Island on 27 December on board the Saint Cyril and Methodius research ship. According to the notification by Defence Minister Dimitar Stoyanov, read out in parliament, the crew is setting sail to provide for the research activity at the Bulgarian Antarctic base, and the practical training of cadets from the Nikola Vaptsarov Naval Academy.

“A journey is beginning that is historic for Bulgaria, because the first military research ship is to enter the World Ocean in the world’s stormiest waters – Drake Passage. We shall reach Livingstone Island, where ice blocks and icebergs await us. We shall prove we are a maritime nation,” commented Prof. Pimpirev.

The mission is scheduled to end on 23 April next year.
