EC to support Bulgaria's efforts in joining the euro zone

The European Commission welcomes Bulgaria's continued ambition to join the euro area when all criteria for this are met, the institution told BNR following the news that Bulgaria will miss its January 1, 2024 target date for joining the euro zone.

"Accession to the euro area is governed by transparent rules and criteria that ensure fair treatment of applicant countries and successful membership. Regardless of the specific date of accession, the Commission will continue to work with Bulgaria to enable its successful membership of the single currency area," Brussels said.

"The eurozone is by no means a mirage and will not remain a mirage," Deputy Finance Minister Metodi Metodiev told Nova TV, stressing that Bulgaria must curb inflation and implement promised reforms.
