"The Ministry of Interior is doing its utmost to prevent migrant smuggling. Border protection is a national problem", caretaker Minister of Interior Ivan Demerdzhiev said in Varna. In Minister Demerdzhiev's words, a number of mistakes have been made in recent years, including the dismissal of 2,000 border police officers. Ivan Demerdzhiev called on all Bulgarian institutions to be active in solving the problem with migrant smuggling and border security. This week Bulgaria is expected to receive technical assistance from the European Commission, which will be of an unprecedented scale, Minister Demerdzhiev said.

There will be more police operations against electoral fraud, drug distribution and domestic crime, Minister Demerdzhiev said in connection with the forthcoming early elections.
