40% of Bulgarian dairy products contain imported milk

Photo: Ani Petrova, BNR

Bulgarian livestock breeders pour out the milk they produce because there is no interest in it and the dairy product producers buy imported milk. At the same time, the state pours in millions to support animal breeding, Simeon Karakolev, chairman of the National Sheep and Goat Breeding Association, told BNR.

40% of the dairy products we consume are not from Bulgarian milk, says Karakolev.
At the same time, a kilogram of cheese leaves the dairy farm at 8.5 euros including VAT, and in retail chains it costs more than 15 euros including VAT
The reason, according to him, is that the state does not have an instrument with which to regulate speculation, and in the whole situation both the raw material producers and the consumers suffer.
