In Kyustendil, Prime Minister Galab Donev took part in the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the rescue of Bulgarian Jews from the death camps during World War II.
He bowed to the memory of the five Kyustendil residents who played an active role in the rescue of the Bulgarian Jews. Donev paid special attention to the contribution of the so-called Kyustendil Four - MP Petar Mikhalev, trader Assen Suichmezov, teacher Vladimir Kurtev and lawyer Ivan Momchilov. "Four worthy people from Kyustendil - a merchant, a lawyer, a teacher and a deputy - assembled 80 years ago on this date to oppose the criminal preparations for the deportation of tens of thousands of Bulgarian Jews," noted Donev. The PM also highlighted the cruicial role of the then deputy chairman of the National Assembly Dimitar Peshev, also a lawmaker from Kyustendil.
"Peshev brought together like-minded parliamentarians who strongly opposed and insisted on the cancellation of the deportation order," Donev recalled, adding that the names of the five have remained in history.
