Gallup International: 53% of Bulgarians are religious, but 58% believe in God

53% of Bulgarians say they are religious. Nearly a third (29%) do not consider themselves religious and 9% are atheists. Another 10% had no answer to the question.
This reveals a Gallup International Association (GIA) survey on the religious attitudes in 61 countries, covering two-thirds of the global population.
Bulgarian society is positioned slightly below the middle in this global "ranking", close in attitudes to other Eastern EU member states, but more religious than those in Western Europe.

In recent years, the share of those who identify themselves as religious has remained stable, but atheism seems to be on the rise. By comparison, in 2014 again one half (52%) of Bulgarians identified themselves as religious, 36% said they were not religious and 3% were atheists. The survey shows that Bulgarians who believe in the existence of God (58%) outnumber those who define themselves as believers in general. Nearly a quarter believe there is no God and 15% are not quite sure.
34% of Bulgarians believe there is life after death, 39% are sure there is no such thing and 20% are not sure.
