The environmental protection organization WWF (World Wildlife Fund) is calling for the creation of new protected areas in Bulgaria. The appeal comes ahead of the observation of the traditional observation of Earth Day on March 25.

WWF proposes to designate as protected the areas "Izvorаt na Belonogata" and "Maritsa - Stamboliyski" in the Upper Thracian lowland; "Todorini kukli" and "Zabanova Padina" - in Western Stara Planina; "Zlatishka beech forest" and "Marinov dol" - in the Zlatitsa-Pirdop valley; "Smilyan" - in the Rhodopes; "Raikovtsi" - in the municipality of Veliko Tarnovo; "Sredets" and "Snyagovo" - near Burgas.

Under its transnational "Common Home. Common future" nature awareness campaign,  WWF starts a campaign for the return of the Balkan lynx to the Bulgarian forests.  The last lynx in Bulgaria was killed in 1941.
