With 16 votes "for" and 4 votes "against", the plenum of the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) decided on the early dismissal of Ivan Geshev from the position of  Chief Prosecutor of Bulgaria.

A proposal for this was made by four of the members of the Prosecutor's College, because of a statement that harms the prestige of the judiciary. The vote was held in the absence of the Prosecutor General.

Ivan Geshev took office as Bulgaria's chief prosecutor in early 2020. His appointment sparked a wave of discontent and protests among Bulgarians at home and abroad demanding the termination of his seven-year mandate. At the end of May 2023, during her presentation as a candidate for Prime Minister with the mandate of the first political force in the 49th National Assembly, Mariya Gabriel, current Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, announced that the removal of Geshev would be a priority in the work of the coalition government.

After today's decision of the SJC, the head of state Rumen Radev should sign a decree for the release of Ivan Geshev from the position of Prosecutor General.
