With 8 votes “for” and 1 “against”, the prosecutors’ college of the Supreme Judicial Council elected Borislav Sarafov acting prosecutor general.
Sarafov is currently deputy prosecutor general and director of the National Investigation Service. The only vote against was cast by Plamen Naydenov. The deputy prosecutors general Borislav Sarafov, Desislava Pironeva and Daniela Masheva gave their consent, over the telephone, to be acting prosecutor general, with Sarafov and Pironeva attending the procedure in person.
“I am deeply convinced that the prosecutor’s office must initiate the respective reforms,” Borislav Sarafov said after his election. “Thank you from the bottom of my heart, but I realize the kind of responsibility I am assuming.”
Deputy Prosecutor General Plamena Tsvetanova submitted her resignation from that post.
The appointment of Borislav Sarafov is subject to appeal at the Supreme Court of Cassation within 14 days, but an appeal does not have a suspensive effect.
