Twenty-two judges will be able to investigate the prosecutor general and his deputies, the court’s press centre has announced.

Their names have been approved by the general assembly of the Criminal College of the Supreme Court of Cassation (SCC). The magistrates are from the Appellate Court-Sofia, the Sofia City Court and from the district courts of Varna, Ruse and Yambol. The magistrates approved are included in a list, after giving their permission in written form. If the need arises, in the event of legitimate cause to initiate an investigation against the prosecutor general or one of his deputies, the dossier will be randomly distributed to one of the judges on the list. The judge selected will be temporarily appointed as prosecutor at the Supreme Prosecutor’s Office of Cassation for the duration of the investigation. Compilation of the list of names was rendered necessary after the National Assembly adopted legislative amendments creating a mechanism for investigating the prosecutor general.
