Hundreds of illegal migrants detained in Bulgaria in just one day

More than 300 illegal migrants were detained in Bulgaria during a special operation on 13 July, said Deputy Prosecutor General Maria Pavlova at a press conference.

19 legal cases have been instituted for trafficking. It was announced, at the press conference, that 59 criminal groups of more than 250 individuals dealing in illegal migrant trafficking are being monitored by law enforcement services.  In 2020, the number of judicial cases against traffickers was 150, and in 2022 – more than 1,000.  

76 illegal migrants were apprehended on Trakia motorway near Chirpan on 14, July, Lazar Hristov, chief of police in Stara Zagora said for the BNR. They are in their early 20s and say they come from Afghanistan. The young men are dehydrated because they were found packed inside a truck. Seven of them have been sent to hospital, the rest have been transported to the refugee centre in Harmanli. The driver of the truck is Bulgarian.
