Parliament has adopted tougher penalties for causing death on the road - up to 5-12 years in prison. However, if the death occurred after alcohol and drug use, offenders face 10 to 20 years in prison. Another measure provides for the confiscation of the vehicle if 1.2 milliliters of alcohol are detected in the driver's blood.

MPs also increased the penalty for illegal trafficking of migrants and it is now 8 years in prison instead of three, and a fine of BGN 5-20 thousand (EUR 2.5-10 thousand). Anyone who facilitates the illegal passage or residence of foreigners will now be punished with a prison sentence of 1-6 years and a fine of 3-10 thousand leva (1.5-5 thousand euros), the Criminal Code now reads.
