The first Shepherd Academy named “Po Todorovi Koshari” was opened in Bulgaria, bringing together people willing to master the profession, learn how to raise animals and to restore forgotten traditional customs and practices, the BTA informed.

More than 20 would-be shepherds and 8 children learned about the history of autochthonous breeds in Bulgaria, the making of sheepfolds, the grazing and milking of the animals, the cleaning of pastures, etc. They are involved in raising a mixed flock of two breeds- the Karakachan sheep and the long-haired goat, BTA further informed. They have been bred since the Thracian period. The breeds are resistant to harsh climate and have strong immunity. They play an important role in maintaining the balance of the ecosystem in the Pirin Mountains.
