An inspection was launched in the town of Ruse (Northeastern Bulgaria) after a lightning struck two 11-year-old boys during a training session at a football stadium. The coaches immediately provided first aid to the lightning-struck children. Ambulances arrived on the scene in less than 10 minutes. Despite doctors' efforts, one of the children died and the other one is in a medically induced coma in a local hospital. The incident occurred shortly after 7 p.m. on August 30 when a thunderstorm suddenly erupted.
According to coach Dinko Dermendzhiev, the incident occurred at the end of the children’s training session. There were four age groups at the training facility, many parents and people around the swimming pool. There was a medic on site who immediately provided emergency medical aid. Everything took place in front of the terrified parents who immediately rushed to help in any way they can. According to the concessionaire, the stadium’s lightning rods are in working order. Criminologists are working to establish the cause of the tragedy. Ruse is in mourning.
