The government approved the purchase of US Stryker combat vehicles for the Land Forces. It is one of the objectives set out in the Investment Expenditure Project "Acquisition of Major Combat Equipment for Battalion Combat Groups of the Mechanized Brigade". The decision of the Council of Ministers was taken after the US State Department approved the sale of 183 Stryker vehicles to Bulgaria for an estimated price of USD 1.5 billion.

The aim of the project is for Bulgaria to achieve interoperability with the NATO Allies, and also to acquire and maintain capabilities for the country's defence independently, in a joint operation and in the collective defence system, as well as to participate in allied operations outside the country's territory.
