In 2023, there is a record migrant pressure. For the first 9 months, the increase compared to 2022 is 50%, Chief Commissioner Anton Zlatanov, director of the Bulgarian Border Police, told the Bulgarian National Television. In the summer months, up to 1,500 people per day tried to illegally cross the Bulgarian-Turkish border. At the moment there are about 500 per day.

Zlatanov emphasized that Bulgaria has technically and professionally met all the criteria for entering Schengen and a purely political decision is expected. He said that only 10-15% of illegal migrants enter the EU through the Balkans. In Bulgaria they are even less. The bulk of up to 80% comes via the Mediterranean Sea.

On October 2, the ban on the admission of passenger cars with Russian registration, adopted by the EU, enters into force in Bulgaria. For trucks, it has already been applied for months, said Zlatanov.
