DIA casts a spell with her folklore-based Samovila

After releasing her song Burn Me at the beginning of the year, DIA is now ready with Samovila (Fairy). DIA is the stage name of Dimana Mircheva, who still goes to school – at the National School of Music in Sofia – but who has already built her own signature style as a self-producing singer-songwriter, with a combination of her own folklore-based music. On Samovila she once again worked with Denis Popstoev, who also did the arrangement, the lyrics are entirely by DIA. The title of her new song is a throwback to fairy legends. Here is DIA with more:

“A lot of people have been asking me what the word samovila means, actually it is the same as samodiva, only the different words are used in different parts of Bulgaria,” DIA explains. “Both words stand for the ethereal creatures living high up in the mountains who sing beautiful songs and whose voices carry far and wide, seducing humans with their music. They know how to attract people, they know how to cast a spell with their songs, and that is what Samovila is all about.”

The video to Samovila was made during the 15th International National Costume Festival Zheravna 2023, at which DIA was a special guest. For the first time the organizers allowed a music video to be shot in such a way – as an exclusive presentation of a song in front of an audience.

“For me it was a dream come true - to be able to make a video at the national costume festival in Zheravna,” DIA says. “I have always thought it was the best place for my music. That is why I thought of shooting Samovila in that magical place, in Zheravna, with all of the people dressed in national costume, and myself wearing traditional clothes, even the cameramen wore shirts with embroidery. The whole thing took place at 2.30 in the morning, and still there was an audience. And when they heard Samovila for the first time, because I hadn’t performed it anywhere else before that, they all got up and started dancing to their own rhythm. It’s the first time anything like that has ever happened to me – it was the first time they heard the song, but they started singing and dancing… Which means the magic came to life, and brought the legend to life as well.”
