Bulgaria, along with twenty-one other nations, signed the newly launched Net-Zero Nuclear Initiative at the United Nations Climate Change Summit in Dubai to triple its nuclear energy capacity by 2050, BNR envoy Mira Stefanova reported. The rationale behind the declaration, which was the brainchild of the United States, was that the revival of nuclear power would be crucial to the reduction of carbon emissions to near-zero levels in the coming decades.

"Nuclear energy is key, it provides sovereignty, autonomy and security for our societies and governments," said President Rumen Radev. He also highlighted the disadvantages of using renewable energy sources for the energy transition - weather, lack of affordable technological solutions for energy storage and financial resources.

The document is in line with Bulgaria's energy policy and intentions to build new units at Kozloduy NPP.
